The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has assured Guimaras officials and residents that it would consider their objections in evaluating applications for mining exploration on the island.

Lormelyn Claudio, DENR regional executive director, said on Monday the opposition of Guimaras officials to mining would be a factor in the approval or disapproval of at least four applications for mining on the 60,000-hectare island.

“If the local government is against it, we have to consider that,” Claudio said in a press conference here at the launching of the Guimaras Integrated Coastal Management Program. read more

OneSteel ; sold 4.4 million tonnes of iron ore last year to its mostly Chinese customers

ONESTEEL is reaping the benefits of mining its own iron ore, with its shares gaining yesterday after it reported better than expected sales from its South Australian mines and flagged production increases.

The boost in production rates, which comes after recent 80 per cent gains in contract prices for Australian iron ore to Asia, sent OneSteel shares up 7.3 per cent, regaining some ground the stock had lost in recent weeks.

OneSteel said it sold 4.4 million tonnes of iron ore last year to its mostly Chinese customers, beating a target of 4 million tonnes.

It also announced plans to ramp up production through its Project Magnet, increasing sales to its Chinese customers to 5 million tonnes this financial year and 6 million tonnes the following. read more

Australia's largest gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd. said Tuesday its annual profit more than doubled in fiscal 2008, helped by the acquisition of operations in Papua New Guinea.

Newcrest said its profit for the year ended June 30 jumped to A$494 million (US$428 million) or A$1.14 a share from A$191 million or 52 Australian cents the previous year. Cash flow from operations totaled A$1.02 billion, up from A$387 million in fiscal 2007. read more

Britain's Chris Hoy won Olympic gold in the men's track cycling sprint final Tuesday after beating teammate Jason Kenny. Scotsman Hoy claimed his third gold medal of the Games, and fourth of his career, after beating England's Kenny over two legs.

Kenny picked up the silver. The bronze medal went to Mickael Bourgain of France after he dominated Germany's Maximilian Levy in a third leg decider. read more
